BSD LIVE PUBLISHER  – The Mohegan Sun Arena  was the place to be this past Sunday night. Not only did most people enjoy a long President’s Day Weekend, but Mohegan added some excitement of its own when they offered up a double-bill of 3 Doors Down and Daughtry !

Both shows were spectacular. Each band could have gotten top billing but it was 3 Doors Down that opened for Daughtry on this wild night of rock and roll.

Chris Daughtry displayed great energy in his performance, covering the entire stage throughout the nite. It seemed as though he never stopped moving during his nearly two-hour show.

For Daughtry, it was a nite of the new, the old and reminiscing. He opened the show with a few of his older songs that set the tempo for the night. Daughtry rattled off “Break the Spell”, “Feels Like Tonight” and “Crawling Back to You” in the early portion of the show. Later he went on to tell the sold-out crowd at Mohegan Sun that he is working on his fourth album which will be out this year, “when the timing is right.” The announcement was met with great enthusiasm.

After the final verse of “Renegade” was finished, Daughtry offered up a softer side of himself. Daughtry spoke to the crowd about his next song, “Gone To Soon”, which he told the audience, ” had taken on a very new meaning”. Daughtry reflected, ” A lot of things have happened in my personal life and the lives of the friends around me. This song has taken on a very new meaning for me since I originally wrote it.

“So, I’m going to dedicate this song to any of you hear tonight that have lost someone much too soon…..”

Daughtry quickly brought the crowd back into the show with “Over You”. Daughtry asked the  crowd to participate in this one, since he was “tired” of singing and needed some help. The audience responded well !

One of the most surprising moments of the show occurred when Daughtry and the band did their version of Phil Collins’In the Air Tonight“. Daughtry pulled it off spectacularly. The crowd rose to its feet after the first few chords, embracing Daughtry and singing along.

DSCN5127Daughtry then went into reminiscing mode. The band started the first few chords to “Home” when he told the crowd, “this song got me a record contract. Thank you !” Daughtry seemed caught up in the moment later in the show at Mohegan Sun. He looked around the arena and thought about the last time he had performed there.

“I recall that the first time we performed here at Mohegan Sun, we opened for Bon Jovi. Wow.”

Daughtry closed out his show with a pair of classics, “September” and “It’s Not Over”.

Unfortunately, the show was over. Guessing that the crowd would have stayed all night if they were allowed.

The combination of Daughtry and 3 Doors Down was spectacular. 3 Doors Down had more of an edge to their music than their fans would normally hear from a studio track. Seeing them live for the first time was impressive with the dynamic of the band members. If you want wanted in your face rock and roll, you got it. If you wanted a ballad, no problem…They gave me more than I was anticipating. I knew they were good. I just didn’t know that they were this good !

3 Doors Down lead singer Brad Arnold was exceptional. The band has been on the road with Daughtry since the middle of last November in support of their new Greatest Hits CD which was released in the Fall.

If you pick up the new CD,  you’ll find a lot of the hits from the past but also three new singles which the band has begun promoting. “Goodbyes” is the second single recently released. The band performed it and the crowd was very receptive. Arnold did a nice job of mixing the band’s hit songs with the three new ones throughout the show.

No 3 Doors Down show would be complete without the band giving its followers an extended version of “Kryptonite

Kryptonite

“I took a walk around the world To ease my troubled mind I left my body laying somewhere In the sands of time But I watched the world float To the dark side of the moon I feel there is nothing I can do, yeah I watched the world float To the dark side of the moon After all I knew it had to be Something to do with you I really don’t mind what happens now and then As long as you’ll be my friend at the end If I go crazy then will you still Call me Superman If I’m alive and well, will you be There a-holding my hand I’ll keep you by my side With my superhuman might Kryptonite You called me strong, you called me weak, But still your secrets I will keep You took for granted all the times I never let you down You stumbled in and bumped your head, If not for me then you’d  be dead I picked you up and put you back On solid ground If I go crazy then will you still Call me Superman If I’m alive and well, Will you be there a-holding my hand I’ll keep you by my side With my superhuman ” DSCN5013

And as much of a fixture that “Kryptonite” is, “When I’m Gone” is equally a 3 Doors Down staple. Arnold closed out the show with the song and pronounced, as he always does at the end of every show….”this song goes out to every man and women serving our country.”

UNCASVILLE, CT (August 7) He’s just past the sunnier side of 85 now and while he may have morphed into that little old shuffling Jewish man he mimicked for decades, Don Rickles is still Don Rickles, delightfully offending anyone within earshot as only he can.

And so it unfolded for a full sixty minutes on stage last night at the Mohegan Sun Arena. Backed by a 14 piece orchestra which often became the comic foil, Rickles’ energy may have been slowed somewhat by the passing years, but his timing was unfailing. Same old jokes. Same old Don Rickles. But hilarious nonetheless.

It's always an honor to be offended by Mr. Warmth

After a grand entrance Mr. Warmth launched into his politically incorrect schtick, quickly unraveling the bow tie and tossing the tuxedo jacket in the general direction of the piano. He was just settling in as he amped it up.

Jews. Blacks. Italians. Japanese. Male. Female. Young. Old. Unsuspecting residents of the front row. And even his Mohegan hosts. No one was spared the barb and no stereotype was off-limits.

In one of his more subtle moves, Rickles pulled two guys up on stage and attempted a World War II Japanese skit. Probably lost on the audience was the fact that it the 65th anniversary of the Allied bombing of Nagasaki. As usual, nothing was sacred. Only Rickles could pull it off.

He also ably demonstrated his vocal talents –he became a classically trained actor after his World War II naval service- and performed his signature song “I’m a Nice Guy,” replete with the best soft-shoe routine that an octogenarian could muster.

Offering a view into his softer side, he related the story of his early association and long friendship with Frank Sinatra and offered a toast to the audience. “I wish you, my friends, for years to come people around you who care,” he said as he slaked a thirst at the conclusion of the night.

If you are a fan of his humor, Don Rickles should remain on your must-see list.

Thirtysomething New York crooner Tony DeSare earned good grades as the opening act. He comfortably navigated his way through a mix of genres, offering tunes by Van Heusen & Cahn (“Come Fly With Me”), Cole Porter (“I get a Kick Out of You”) and Prince (“Kiss”), as well as two of his own offerings (“New Orleans Tango” and “How I will Say I Love You”). DeSare has opened for Rickles several times on this current tour and can regularly be heard on Sunday nights at Bemelman’s Bar at the Carlyle Hotel in New York City.

Rickles will be making an August 31st appearance on Betty White’s show ‘Hot in Cleveland’.

For all you Josh Groban fans, mark this day in your calendar, July 30th 2011. That was the day that Josh Groban was inducted into the Mohegan Sun Walk of Fame. Ok it’s not Hollywood but not bad either.

Josh shares the walk with 23 other celebrities including some pretty heavy hitters like Tony Bennet, Billy Joel and Rod Stewart. All icons in the world of music entertainment and for all his accomplishments,  Mr. Groban is just getting started.

“Grobanites” gathered at Mohegan Sun for the “Straight To You” concert last Saturday night. Groban proudly displayed his new urban style theater set for his 2011 tour.  The set featured two stages from which Groban masterfully to deliver a one of a kind show.

Groban, in a very short period of time has mastered his showmanship. He loves to interact with the audience and the Grobanites can’t get enough. Groban takes every opportunity to reach out to the crowd and bring them closer to the performance. At one point in the show during a Q&A session, Josh invited an Opera singer wannabe from the crowd on stage to sing a duet. To the amazement of the audience and dare I say to Groban himself, she did surprising well belting out “The Prayer” while Josh held her hand.

During the evening, Josh sang from his numerous hit list, singing such favorites as “Machine” and “Weeping”. He displayed his numerous talents during the night singing “Oceano” in Italian and “Alejate” in Spanish, both huge hits of the night. Along with the playing the piano, Josh matched both his drummers beat for beat. He is an amazing talent.

Groban’s 13 piece band was a delight to watch and listen to, a polished and tight as a group. The band performed instrumentals of “Straight To You” to open the show and later in the evening belted out a great version of Paul McCartney’s “Live and Let Die”.

Josh ended the evening with his signature “You Raise Me Up” The audience sang along during the chorus.

For all the piano fans out there, Groban’s opening act “ELEW” has to be heard to be believed. Elew’s brand of Rock- Jazz is refreshing to listen to. He had sounds coming from his piano that I did not think were possible coming from a grand piano. Check this guy out and add a few songs to the Ipod!

Groban Set List:

           “Straight To You”

  1. Changing Colours
  2. February Song
  3. You are Loved (Don’t Give Up)

While Mother Nature turned up the heat outside, Rihanna turned it up inside.

Cee Lo Green was slated to be the opening act but stepped down a few weeks ago, siting a busy schedule, he is a judge on NBC’s “The Voice”. Many have speculated that bad reviews of his performances at prior Rihanna shows were the real reason for his stepping down. Without weighing too much on speculation, I would have to agree given the fact that you would have to be out of your mind to not open for this woman given her status as a household name.

After a deejay and some dancers warmed up the crowd, Rihanna took the stage in a turquoise mini trench coat and opened with her hit “Only Girl (in the World)” before stripping down to a neon bejeweled bikini for “Disturbia”.

She was accompanied by a full live band that added an almost “rock” like feel to her usually pop-tempo hits. In fact, they just about stole the show.

As someone who has never seen a pop show besides The New Kids on the Block, I was expecting a lot more “showmanship” out of Rihanna. Besides gyrating on stage, implying sexual acts and briefly accompanying her dancers, she really just walked around, so naturally I was expecting to have her focus on her vocal abilities. That didn’t really happen either. She sang all the songs in her nearly 2 hour set list, no lip synching, but there was very little effort in her voice. The songs were perfect and on key, but there was a lack of “oomph” so to speak.

I follow her music solely based on what is played on the radio but given the chance to hear some of her other songs I did find a couple new favorites.

“Mandown” is clearly a nod to her Barbados roots due to its island vibe.

“Breaking Dishes” is a strong woman’s anthem, maybe due to her highly publicized abusive relation ship with R&B artist Chris Brown.

My only real area of criticism would have to be towards the parents who brought their young children to the show, by young I mean under 7 years old. There were loads of little girls this age there. As a mother of a 5 year old girl myself I was a little shocked to see kids because of the nature of her songs. She has a hit entitled “S&M”, her last cd had a “parental advisory” label. She also spent the entire show barely dressed. That’s Rihanna, no surprise there, most likely the parents knew what they were in for. Take the kids to Big Time Rush and leave the sexy pop stars to the more mature crowd. This is just my personal opinion.

All in all the night was a blast. I was accompanied by my good friend Erin, who took all the photographs of the show for BSD, I danced my butt off, sang until my throat was dry and was so exhausted the next day that I was in bed by 6pm. Everything you can hope for in a concert.

SET LIST:

  1. (Prince cover)
  2. (Sheila E. cover) (snippet)
  3. (Jay-Z & Kanye West cover) (medley)
  4. (T.I. cover) (medley)
  5. (Video Interlude)

Keith Urban rocks Mohegan Sun

Keith Urban and his band of hip guitar slingers electrified the crowd from start to finish in Uncasville on Saturday night. Urban came out swinging with a slick rendition of “Put You In a Song”, followed by and even slicker “I Told You So”. By the third song, the crowd was on its feet singing along. Through a two hour set and a two-song encore, the crowd sang back-up to Urban’s smooth vocals.

Playing all the hits that fans sing aloud in their cars, Urban rolled through a playlist full of soulful tunes and righteous guitar riffs. With his smooth crooning, Urban charmed the crowd with “Stupid Boy,” and “Making Memories of Us,” before turning the volume back up and rocking out to “I’m In” and “Jeans On.”

The Get Closer tour brought Urban out into the crowd and fans up onto the stage as the band rolled through all of Urban’s hits. The engaging Aussie held the crowd rapt as he moved from one satellite mike to the next, ensuring the entire arena an up close and personal show. As he moved from soulful ballad to high-energy quasi-rock song, the crowd rolled with him without missing a beat.

Keith Urban’s show sounded more like a laidback rock concert than the cookie-cutter country shows so common these days. Through the last note of encore with “Better Life,” the crowd was still on its feet. With his easy manner and obvious love of the music, Urban showed why there is nothing quite as exciting as a few hours with the man and his guitar.

Saturday’s set list included:
“Put You In a Song,”
“I Told You So,”
“You’re My Better Half,”
“Only You Can Love Me This Way,”
“You Gonna Fly,”
“Boondocks,” “
“Long Hot Summer,”
“I’m In,”
“Jeans On,”
“You’ll Think Of Me,”
“Days Go By,”
“Georgia Woods,”
“Til Summer Comes Around,”
“Sweet Thing,”
“Kiss a Girl,”
“Without You,”
“Somebody Like You,”
“Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way/Who Wouldn’t Wanna Be Me,”
“You Look Good In My Shirt,”

(Encore)
“Tonight I Wanna Cry,”
“Better Life.”
