Q: You guys do a good job of putting games behind you, win or lose, but is there something advantageous to hanging onto that feeling a bit after an ugly win like last Sunday?

TB: I mean, it’s always an emotional game. I think we put a lot out on the field. We put a lot into the preparation throughout the course of the week and you’d love for it to go well. Sometimes it doesn’t always go very well. But you put as much into it the following week as well. I think that’s what you can afford during the regular season, where you know there’s a game the next week, like we have this week against the Dolphins. Hopefully everyone used the rest a little bit to their advantage and we can go into his week with a lot of energy and enthusiasm. There’s a lot at stake.

Q: You do not need any extra motivation? That game did it?

TB: No, I don’t think you can draw much from previous games. You have experiences, like for example in the San Francisco game, we were down 28 points, so if we’re down 28 points again – which I hope we’re not – at least you can say, ‘Well, we’ve come back from this before.’ So I think you can draw on those experiences, but this week is going to be its own separate game and we’re going to have to go out there an earn it.

Q: As a leader, is there a constant line you need to toe between being critical and motivating and also being supportive? Is that a constant balance where you have to consider what a guy needs and how you should approach him?

TB: Sure. Well, we get that from our coaches a lot, too. I think we kind of take the lead from our head coach, who always talks about us getting better and making improvements and certainly not focusing on the things that were doing well, but the things more that we need to improve. As a veteran, you kind of take the lead from him. We all have our own feelings about how things are and we express those in different ways. It’s all in hopes of winning games and to be at our best when we need it the most.

Q: Is there a constant need for you to go to what you understand as being necessary to win a championship since you’ve played in and won championships and to express that to other guys? Do you ever have doubt that they’ll be willing to give the same amount as you or will ever really understand what it’s about?

TB: Every team is different and every player is different and the motivations are different for different players, but ultimately, we’re all here to win and that’s what our ultimate motivation is as a team. Part of being part of a team is being selfless and giving up whatever individual goals you may have for the benefit of the team. It’s all about teamwork and what we can build together and I’m only as good as the guys around me; they’re only as good as I am. I think part of that is motivating each other so that we can all be on the same page and we can all be at our best.

Q: Does the team’s sense of urgency change at all this week, knowing what’s at stake this week and beyond?

TB: I think we prepare pretty hard all season. It’s the last game of the year, so it’s out last opportunity o make improvements before the playoffs. Hopefully we can get some guys back. I know we’ve been battling through some little injuries over the course of the season, but this is a time for us to be at our best.

Q: You have talked about riding the wave of emotions. After a stream of great games, you have to remember that nothing’s been achieved yet. And then after a strong of not as good games, are you reminded to stay the course and figuring out what you did wrong?

TB: I think it’s about playing consistent football and I think we’ve got to do a better job of that. It hasn’t been as consistent as we would have liked, but we’ve still got a chance to improve it. And really, if we’re consistent this week, which I hope we are, that’s ultimately what’s going to help us win this game, not really what happened in the previous month or two months. Our goals are ahead of us and that’s where we’re looking and that’s the direction we’re heading in.

Q: Coach Belichick has talked about how the stability of you and him being together here for so long. How has that helped you over the years?

TB: There’s no better coach out there and there’s no one that I’d ever want to play for. He brings a consistency to our team in terms of our motivation, our focus, our execution, his expectations for us. I think winning is the most important thing and that’s the most important thing to him, and that’s what it’s all about, it’s a competition. There’s a test at the end of every week to see how well we did, and I think it’s important for us to – it’s great when you don’t play your best to still win the games. You play better some weeks and lose games, but it comes down to wining the games and beating the opponent that you’re facing and that’s the goal of coach Belichick. And [it’s] what he talks about and preaches to us every single week about our execution and our attention to detail so that we can go out and be at our best competitively so we can score more points than the other team.

Q: You meet with him every week, correct?

TB: Multiple times.

Q: Do you still lean things from him?

TB: Of course, oh yeah. I mean, you can never stop learning in this game and you can never stop improving. He’s been at it a for a lot longer than I have and I’m sure he feels like he’s still improving ad a coach and I’d agree. The things that we talk about, the things that; we’re trying to accomplish, those change. There are times when game plan changes or the opponent changes, but what you do individually to prepare yourself needs to be better. Certainly I’ve found ways to do that as I’ve gained more experience that I can prepare better and I can hopefully be a better leader and teammate and so forth, and ultimately go out there and execute well enough to win.

Q: Do you try and go in there and stump him with something?

TB: There’s not much I can do to do that. He’s got a great memory, so his history lessons are some of the most fun meetings that we have. When he gets to talking about previous players that he coached against or that he coached with, there are some pretty great stories and some history. Because I’m a pretty big football fan, it’s nice to hear those.

Q: In your time here, how important has the final game of the season been in regards to providing springboard momentum into the playoffs?

TB: It depends on the year. I don’t think that – I think you want to be playing well so you have confidence going into the playoffs. There’s no question about that, but like I said, whatever we do this weekend isn’t going to have any bearing on what happens in the playoff [game] the following week. What’s going to have a bearing on the playoff [game] is how we prepare for that week and the opponent and our scheme and our execution. We’re trying to build some confidence this week in what we’re doing, go out and have good practices, and go out and see if we can execute better than we have been.

Q: Is it important to you that you played Miami fairly recently and maybe they haven’t changed as much as if you had played them earlier in the season?

TB: Yeah, well, I’ve seen everything. It’s pretty easy to get up to speed when it’s only been two or three weeks. It is pretty fresh in our mind of how they played us, the things they do well. Certainly, they gave us everything we could handle. They’re a good team. There’s nothing easy about this team. They’ve been on the short end of a few losses, but they challenge you in a lot of different ways.

Q: Have you seem any changes since you last played them?

TB: Not really. Schematically, no.

Q: Gil Santos and Gino Cappelletti have been calling Patriots games for decades. Gino retired last year and Gil will be retiring this year. Can you talk about what they’ve meant to you over the years?

TB: It’s a pretty great twosome they’ve had for a long time. Gino was a hell of a player her and Gil, it’s always nice to see both those guys after the game or before the game, and the kind of support that they’ve given us over the years. I don’t get to hear them much on the radio, obviously, but on some of those highlight videos that we’ve had where you hear Gil’s calls, it’s pretty special. Yeah, they’ll be missed; they’re a great group.

Q: Are you aware of the playoff scenarios?

TB: Sure, yeah. It would be hard [not to be].

Q: So when you take the field, are you going to be aware of whether a bye is a possibility based on what happens earlier in the day with Houston?

TB: I’m sure we’ll all be aware of that, yeah. No question. But I don’t think that changes what our goal is for the weekend. I think we’re trying to win this game regardless. It could be different if some other teams win, but that’s really out of our control. We’re just going to go out and try to win.

AUGUST 23rd              PAWTUCKET (71-61)   vs.  CHARLOTTE (77-55)        7:15 pm

Pawtucket Red Sox RHP Zach Stewart (3-4, 4.13)

Charlotte Knights LHP Charles Leesman (11-9, 2.59)

Southbound for the Final Trip – The Pawtucket Red Sox begin their final roadtrip of the season when they start a crucial 8-game southern trip tonight with the opener of a 4-game series against the Charlotte Knights at 7:15 pm at Knights Stadium.  The PawSox will take on the almost certain IL South champion Charlotte Knights for games tonight, tomorrow night, and Saturday night all at 7:15 pm and the finale on Sunday afternoon at 2:15 pm.  Charlotte, who has a 9½-game lead atop the IL South, could clinch their division during this series as their Magic Number is 3.  The Sox will move further south next week for a 4-game set in Georgia against the Gwinnett Braves (Monday – Thursday nights all at 7:05 pm).  The PawSox will return to McCoy one week from tomorrow (Friday, August 31) for a wrap-around Labor Day weekend 4-game series against the 1st-place Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees that in all likelihood will determine their playoff fate.

Dirty Dozen – The PawSox have 12 games remaining and their lead in the IL Wild Card race is just a ½-game over Lehigh Valley while Columbus is -3 GB, Norfolk is -3½ GB, and Rochester is -5 GB.  Among Pawtucket’s final dozen games they will play 8 against division-leaders – these 4 in Charlotte and 4 vs. Scranton/WB at home from August 31 – September 3.  The Knights and the Yankees both appear playoff bound and they currently own the 2nd and 3rd best records in the entire league respectively just barely behind Indianapolis.

Wild One – While five teams are fighting for one spot in the wild card race with the PawSox the current front-runner the other playoff semi-final series appears all but set as it should be IL West Champ Indianapolis (up by 11-games) vs. IL South Champ Charlotte (+9½-games).

Playoffs? – Pawtucket has lost 4 of their last 6 games but they still cling to the wild card lead (by a ½-game) after falling into a tie with LehighValley on Saturday.  The current PawSox skid has, however, dropped them from 1-game out in the division race on August 15 to a current season-high deficit of -5½ GB of front-running Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.  The International League’s four-team postseason playoffs begin two weeks from yesterday.  If things ended right now then Pawtucket would be the IL Wild Card and Scranton/WB would be the IL North Champ.  The teams would meet in the Governors’ Cup semi-finals which would begin with Games 1 & 2 on September 5 & 6 at McCoy Stadium.  Scranton/WB would be the home team for the final three games from September 7-9 with those games played at Frontier Field in Rochester, NY (the final two games if necessary).

Holding On – The PawSox 2nd-place spot is precarious as their ½-game edge is in jeopardy with Lehigh Valley playing at Rochester this evening and ace Tyler Cloyd (12-1) on the mound.  The Sox have been in either 1st-place or 2nd-place since July 16 when they were in 3rd-place in the division.  That also marks the last time the PawSox did not hold the lead in either the IL North or the IL Wild Card. The Sox did drop into a tie for 2nd-place with Lehigh Valley last Saturday but moved back alone in 2nd-place on Sunday.  From July 17-31 the PawSox were either in 1st-place by a ½-game or in 2nd-place by a ½-game every day during that stretch.

Postseason Hopes – Pawtucket is trying to capture back-to-back IL North regular-season titles for the first time in franchise-history but their chances appear slim as they are presently -5½ GB of front-running Scranton/WB which is their largest deficit of the season.  Pawtucket’s largest 1st-place lead of the season was +5-games from June 15-17.  The PawSox, who lead the wild card race, last earned the IL Wild Card
playoff berth in 2008 when they lost in the 1st round of the playoffs to IL North Champion Scranton/WB.  Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, meanwhile, is bidding for their 6th IL North title in the last 7 years. They won five straight North Division crowns from 2006-2010 before the Sox broke that streak last year.

Head to Head - The PawSox have 12 games remaining in the regular-season while Scranton/WB and LehighValley both have 11 games left (the Yanks and Pigs have a scheduled off-day on August 28 while the Sox play everyday for the remainder of the season).  The Sox have 8 road games left and finish the regular-season with 4 at home.  Head-to-head match-ups between the three top teams in the division will go a long way in determining who emerges with a playoff spot(s) as the PawSox face Scranton/WB for a 4-game set to end the regular-season from August 31 – September 3.  Furthermore, the Yankees and IronPigs will play 5 more games against each other starting this weekend during a stretch from August 25-30 with all 5 games in Allentown, PA (the first 3 with Lehigh as the home team and the last 2 with Scranton/WB as the home team).

AUGUST 9th                SYRACUSE (57-61)     at    PAWTUCKET (65-53)       12:05 pm

Syracuse Chiefs RHP Jeff Mandel (2-4, 3.51) vs.Pawtucket Red Sox RHP Billy Buckner (4-5, 4.48)

Weekday Matinee – The Pawtucket Red Sox, who fell into 2nd-place (-½ GB of the Scranton/Wilkes Barre Yankees) last night,  and the Syracuse Chiefs conclude their season-series against each other today with a matinee affair at 12:05 pm at McCoy Stadium.  The PawSox are 17-8 in day games this season and they have won their last 6 afternoon games in a row (since an 8-5 loss in LehighValley on July 1).  After today the Sox have just four more afternoon games for the remainder of the season – on Saturday, August 18 at Fenway and Sunday, August 19 at McCoy both vs. Buffalo; Sunday, August 26 in Charlotte; and the final regular-season game of the year on Labor Day Monday, September 3 vs. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre at McCoy.

Until Next Year -  The PawSox and Syracuse are facing each other for the final time in 2012 today in what is their third series against each other in about a month span – all here at McCoy Stadium.  Syracuse took game one of this 2-game set last night,   10-2 (matching Pawtucket’s worst loss of the season) but the PawSox still have a 9-6 lead in the season-series vs. the Chiefs (5-2 here at McCoy) with the finale on tap for today. Syracuse was the last team to come to Pawtucket this season when they played their first game of the year at McCoy on July 7.  The PawSox swept that series on July 7-8.  They met again a week later for a 4-game set from July 16-19 at McCoy with the Sox taking 3 of 4 in that series.  And now they play their final game against each other today here at McCoy.  These two IL North rivals first met in 2012 for a 4-game series in Syracuse from April 16-19 with the PawSox sweeping that series.  Two months later from June 18-21, also in Syracuse, the Chiefs returned the favor by sweeping that 4-game set from the PawSox.

Win Some, Lose Some – In the last three weeks, the PawSox have not been able to win more than two in a row or lose more than two in a row.  Since a 3-game winning streak from July 15-17, the Sox have won back-to-back games four different times (including this past Sunday & Monday before last night’s loss) and they have lost back-to-back games only once (August 1 & 2).  Over a longer stretch the Sox have won 14 of their last 23 games and are 16-12 following a 4-16 tailspin from June 18 – July 6.

Home Improvement – The Sox have won 5 of 7 at home and Pawtucket has won 8 of their last 11 games at McCoy since July 15 after losing 11 of 15 at home from June 22 – July 14.

***If the Season Ended Today - Right now it would be Pawtucket as the IL Wild Card vs. Scranton/WB as the IL North Champ but that could change as early as tonight as the PawSox and Yankees are separated by just a ½-game in the IL North standings.  Both the Sox and Yanks have little breathing room in the wild card race as LehighValley is -1½ GB and Columbus is -2½ GB of the PawSox in the chase for the wild card.

View From the Top – In eight days thus far this month, the PawSox have been in 2nd-place (right now by a ½-game), alone in 1st-place four times (last Friday and Sunday – Tuesday), and in a virtual tie for 1st-place with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre three times on August 1, 2, and 4.  Their largest lead while in 1st-place this month has been 1-game (the Sox are currently -½-game).  From July 17-31 the PawSox were either in 1st-place and +½-game or in 2nd-place and –½-game in the division every day during that stretch.

This Homestand – The PawSox are 3-2 on this 6-game homestand that concludes today.  Pawtucket took 3 of 4 from LehighValley over the wrap-around weekend.  After today’s game the PawSox will head to Rochester and will spend the wrap-around weekend in New York.  It will begin with a 2-game series in Rochester tomorrow and Saturday nights (both at 7:05 pm) before moving to Buffalo for 2-games on Sunday (6:05 pm) and Monday nights (7:05 pm – Live on NESN).  Pawtucket will be right back to McCoy for a huge 9-game homestand this coming Tuesday that will feature 5-games vs. Scranton/WB (including a make-up doubleheader on Aug. 15 at 5:35 pm) along with the Future’s at Fenway game on Saturday, August 18 vs. Buffalo at approximately 4:35 pm.  The homestand will last from August 14-21 after which the Sox will have just four regular-season home games remaining (August 31 – September 3).

AUGUST 3rd           LEHIGH VALLEY (62-52)    at   PAWTUCKET (62-51)     7:05 pm

Lehigh Valley IronPigs RHP B.J. Rosenberg (4-2, 2.00)

Pawtucket Red Sox RHP Billy Buckner (3-5, 4.95)

Change of Scenery – The (tied for) 1st-place Pawtucket Red Sox (with the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees) and the 3rd-place Lehigh Valley IronPigs – who are all separated by just a ½-game in the IL North Standings – continue what amounts to a 6-game home and home series with the opener of a 4-game wrap-around weekend series tonight at 7:05 pm at McCoy Stadium.  The PawSox – who were swept in a 2-game set at Lehigh Valley the past two nights (by scores of 3-2 in 10-innings and 2-1) to begin this important stretch – while now face the IronPigs here at home tonight, tomorrow at 6:05 pm, Sunday at 1:05 pm, and Monday at 7:05 pm.  That will conclude the season-series between the clubs unless they meet for the second straight year in the IL Playoffs.  Last year the PawSox finished in 1st-place (2-games ahead of LehighValley) but were then swept in 3 straight by the Pigs in the IL semi-final playoffs.

The Amazing Race – Pawtucket’s defeats the past two nights in Lehigh Valley have tightened things considerably in the division as the Sox have been in a virtual tie with Scranton/WB for 1st-place for the past two days (the Yanks have a .550 to .549 pct. lead) while the IronPigs have pulled to within just a half game of the lead.  All three teams are also the top contenders for a playoff spot as one would win the division (Scranton/WB), another would be the wild card (Pawtucket), and one would be just left out (Lehigh Valley) if the season were to end today.  That could all change tonight obviously.  For the past two and a half weeks (since July 17) the PawSox have been either +½-game or –½-game in the division with the exception of yesterday and today (tied for 1st).  Furthermore, after 9 of their last 13 games they have either moved into 1st-place or fallen to 2nd-place as a result of that game.

Not Much of a Difference a Year Makes – Pawtucket is one game off their pace from last season after 113 games as they had a 63-50 record last year compared to 62-51 this season.  Last August 6 the Sox did improve to 64-50 but they were in 2nd-place and –½ GB at the time.  The PawSox went 17-12 last August (and 4-0 last September) and moved into a tie for 1st-place last August 7.  They remained either tied for 1st or alone in 1st for all but one day the remainder of the season (2nd-place, -1 GB on August 24).

Every Game Matters – As mentioned, from July 17-31 the PawSox were either a ½-game ahead in 1st-place in the IL North or a ½-game behind in 2nd-place in the division.  They were in 2nd (and a ½-game behind) on July 17, 18, 19, 21, 22, 24, 26, 27, 28, and 30 while they were in 1st (and a ½-game ahead) on July 20, 23, 25, 29, and 31.  The PawSox have begun the month of August in a virtual tie with Scranton/WB atop the IL North (the Yanks have one less win and one less loss while the Sox have one less loss than Lehigh Valley).

Win Some, Lose Some – The PawSox have lost 2 in a row and 3 of 4 but are 4-4 in their last 8 games.  They have won 11 of their last 18 games and are 13-10 following a 4-16 tailspin from June 18 – July 6.

Chasing the Pigs – Lehigh Valley is one of just three teams the PawSox have a losing record against this season as the Sox are   5-7 vs. the IronPigs thus far (finishing 3-5 in Allentown, PA and 2-2 thus far in Pawtucket).  Pawtucket also trails Charlotte (1-3) and finished 3-5 vs. Louisville (the only other teams they have a losing record against to this point).

Stats vs. Lehigh Valley - The PawSox are hitting .266 in the 12 games vs. the IronPigs (104-for-391) with 14 HR (4 by Gomez, 2 by Repko & LaRoche, and 1 by Hassan & Rivera).  Sox pitchers are 5-7 with a 2.89 ERA vs. LehighValley (31 ER in 96.2 IP) with 8 HRA.  The PawSox have out-scored the IronPigs by a 52-35 margin in the season-series thus far.

AUGUST 2nd           PAWTUCKET (62-50)    at   LEHIGH VALLEY (61-52)     7:05 pm

Pawtucket Red Sox LHP Chris Hernandez (1-0, 1.64) vs. Lehigh Valley IronPigs RHP Tyler Cloyd (10-1, 1.98)

The Amazing Race – The (tied for) 1st-place Pawtucket Red Sox (with the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees) and the 3rd-place Lehigh Valley IronPigs – who are all separated by just 1½-games in the IL North Standings – conclude their 2-game set in Allentown, PA tonight with a 7:05 pm game at Coca-Cola Park.  Both teams will travel to Pawtucket overnight and continue what amounts to a 6-game home and home series with the opener of a 4-game wrap-around weekend series tomorrow night at McCoy Stadium.  The Sox and Pigs play at McCoy tomorrow at 7:05 pm, Saturday at 6:05 pm, Sunday at 1:05 pm, and Monday at 7:05 pm.  That will conclude the season-series between the clubs unless they meet for the second straight year in the IL Playoffs.

About as Tight as You Can Get – The PawSox fell in the series-opener to Lehigh Valley last night, 3-2 in 10-innings which tightened things considerably in the division as the Sox are in a virtual tie with Scranton/WB for 1st-place (the Yanks have a .555 to .554 pct. lead) while the IronPigs pulled to within just a game and a half of the lead.  All three teams are also the top contenders for a playoff spot as one would win the division (Scranton/WB), another would be the wild card (Pawtucket), and one would be just left out (Lehigh Valley) if the season were to end today.  For the past two+ weeks (since July 17) the PawSox have been either +½-game or –½-game in the division with the exception of right now (tied for 1st).  Furthermore, after 9 of their last 12 games they have either moved into 1st-place or fallen to 2nd-place as a result of that game.

Deja vu All Over Again – Pawtucket has the exact same record this season after 112 games that they had last year (62-50).  Last year they were 62-50 on August 4 and in 2nd-place, -1½ GB of Lehigh Valley.  The Sox went on a 4-game winning streak from that point to move into a tie for 1st-place.  The PawSox went 17-12 last August (and 4-0 last September) and moved into a tie for 1st-place last August 7.  They remained either tied for 1st or alone in 1st for all but one day the remainder of the season (2nd-place, -1 GB on August 24).  The Sox eventually won the IL North by 2-games but were eliminated in the IL North semi-finals in 3 straight games by LehighValley.

The PawSox have begun the month of August in a virtual tie with Scranton/WB atop the IL North (Yanks have a .555 winning pct. while Sox are .554).

Back on Track – The PawSox have won 4 of 7, 11 of their last 17 games and 13 of 22 following a 4-16 tailspin from June 18 – July 6.  They matched their season-high of -3 GB on July 6.

Chasing the Pigs – Lehigh Valley is one of just three teams the PawSox have a losing record against this season as the Sox are   5-6 vs. the IronPigs thus far (3-4 here in Allentown and 2-2 in Pawtucket).  Pawtucket also trails Charlotte (1-3) and finished 3-5 vs. Louisville (the only other teams they have a losing record against to this point).

Stats vs. Lehigh Valley - The PawSox are hitting .277 in the 11 games vs. the IronPigs (100-for-361) with 13 HR (4 by Gomez, 2 by Repko, and 1 by Anderson, Hassan, Repko and Rivera).  Sox pitchers are 5-6 with a 2.94 ERA vs. LehighValley (29 ER in 88.2 IP) with 8 HRA.  The PawSox have out-scored the IronPigs by a 51-33 margin in the season-series thus far.
