BOSTON – The Boston Celtics announced today that they have acquired guard Courtney Lee from the Houston Rockets as part of a sign and trade agreement. In the three team trade also featuring the Portland Trail Blazers, the Houston Rockets have acquired JaJuan Johnson, E’Twaun Moore, Sean Williams and a future second round pick. Portland has acquired guard Sasha Pavlovic, two future second round picks and cash considerations.

“We are very excited that we were able to acquire Courtney Lee,” said Danny Ainge, Celtics President of Basketball Operations. “Courtney brings a vast set of tools on both ends of the court and will be a great fit on our roster.”

Lee, a 6’5” guard, averaged 11.4 points, 2.7 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.2 steals in 30.3 minutes per game last season for Houston.  During his 26 starts for Houston during the 2011-12 season he upped his averages to 14.0 points and 1.50 steals. Lee shot 40.1% from three-point range last season which ranked 15th in the NBA. Lee scored a season-high 25 points twice this past season. He recorded 25 points on 11-of-18 shooting including 3-of-5 from three-point territory against Sacramento on April 8 and he also recorded 25 points against the LA Clippers on 9-of-14 from the field and 4-of-9 from three. Lee has posted career averages of 10.0 points, 2.8 rebounds, 1.4 assists, 1.0 steals and has shot 38.6% from three in 287 career games between Orlando, New Jersey and Houston after having been picked 22nd overall in the 2008 NBA Draft by Orlando.

BOSTON – The Boston Celtics announced today that they have signed free agent guard Jason Terry. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“Jason is one of the best sixth men in the NBA and his versatility in the backcourt is a great addition to our roster,” said Danny Ainge, Celtics President of Basketball Operations.

Terry, a 6’2” guard, was the NBA’s 2009 Sixth Man of the Year and also was a member of the 2011 NBA Champion Dallas Mavericks. Last season in Dallas, he averaged 15.1 points, 2.4 rebounds and 3.6 assists while shooting 37.8% from three-point territory.  Terry has made the fourth most three-point shots in NBA history with 1,788 trailing only Ray Allen, Reggie Miller and Jason Kidd.

“The Celtics have such a great tradition of winning and it was something that drew me to the team right away,” said Terry. “I look forward to getting out onto the court and helping this team in its pursuit of another banner.”

The former Arizona Wildcat finished second in the NBA last season with 138 made three-pointers and was third in the NBA in three-point field goal attempts (365). Terry has also been one of the most durable players in the NBA in recent memory playing in 1,022 of a possible 1,050 regular season games during his 13 year career. Terry has averaged 16.1 points, 4.7 assists and 1.3 steals per game while shooting 38.0% from three in his career.

Boston Celtics Introduce 2012 Draft Picks and Unveil Newly Renovated Library and Multipurpose Room

Members of the Boston Celtics Organization joined students to unveil a renovated library and multipurpose room donated by The Boston Celtics Shamrock Foundation

BOSTON (July 2, 2012) – Boston Celtics 2012 draft picks, forwards Jared Sullinger and Kris Joseph along with center Fab Melo joined Boston Celtics Co-owner and Managing Partner, Wyc Grousbeck, Boston Celtics Co-owner, Managing Partner and Shamrock Foundation President, Stephen Pagliuca, and Boston Celtics President of Basketball Operations, Danny Ainge to celebrate the unveiling of a new Boston Celtics Shamrock Foundation (BCSF) renovated library and multipurpose room. The event happened at the Jackson Mann Educational Complex in Allston, MA with twenty-two students from the Jackson Mann k-8 School/Community Center and the Horace Mann School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

The renovated shared library space of the Jackson Mann K-8 School/Community Center and the Horace Mann School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing was donated by the Boston Celtics Shamrock Foundation.  The Foundation transformed a cluttered library space into a computer lab, gaming room, auxiliary classroom and quiet reading area to be utilized by over 1,000 Boston youth. The walls have been wrapped in Celtics graphics and other images designed to inspire and motivate the students.

“I am proud the Boston Celtics Shamrock Foundation is able to provide an important necessity for the youth of our local community,” Boston Celtics Co-owner, Managing Partner and Shamrock Foundation President Stephen Pagliuca said. “The newly refurbished library and multipurpose room will make a difference in the children’s lives and go a long way in furthering their education.”

Prior to the library unveiling, the Boston Celtics held an introductory press conference with the 2012 draft picks for the media in attendance. This marks the second consecutive season that the Celtics have held an introductory press conference for their draft picks in conjunction with a community event.

BOSTON CELTICS AND MAINE RED CLAWS ENTER INTO SINGLE AFFILIATION PARTNERSHIP BEGINNING WITH 2012-13 SEASON

– Celtics Become Record 11th NBA Team To Have ‘One-to-One’ NBA D-League Affiliate –

– Fifth To Enter Into ‘Hybrid Affiliation’ –

New York, June 21, 2012 –– The Boston Celtics, the Maine Red Claws, and the NBA Development League today announced that the Celtics and Red Claws have entered into a single affiliation partnership beginning with the 2012-13 NBA D-League season.  Boston will be Maine’s sole NBA affiliate and will have full control over the team’s basketball operations.

This partnership, also referred to as the “hybrid affiliation,” is the fifth of its kind in the NBA D-League.  It allows for NBA teams to secure control of and cover the expenses related to the basketball operations of an NBA D-League team while partnering with existing local ownership, which maintains responsibility for the team’s off-the-court business operations.

The Celtics join the Houston Rockets with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, the Brooklyn Nets with the Springfield Armor, the New York Knicks with the Erie BayHawks and the Portland Trail Blazers with the Idaho Stampede as NBA teams with “hybrid affiliations.”

Six other NBA teams are singly affiliated with their NBA D-League affiliates.  The Cleveland Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Lakers, Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs fully own and operate the Canton Charge, Dakota Wizards, L.A. D-Fenders, Tulsa 66ers and Austin Toros, respectively, while the Dallas Mavericks and Texas Legends are one-to-one affiliates.

“The newly-enhanced relationship between the Celtics and Red Claws is an exciting development for both franchises,” said NBA D-League President Dan Reed.

The Red Claws and Celtics have been affiliated since the 2009-10 season, Maine’s first in the NBA D-League, sharing the affiliation with the Charlotte Bobcats and the Philadephia 76ers during the 2011-12 season.  New affiliates for the Bobcats and 76ers will be announced at a later date.

“We are excited to formalize an already great relationship we have established with Maine. Not only is it a perfect fit geographically, but the people of Maine are some of our most loyal Celtic fans, and Bill Ryan Jr. and the Red Claws staff have been great to work with,” said Danny Ainge, Celtics President of Basketball Operations.  “What a great opportunity for our young players to get game reps and develop their skills, while still maintaining the continuity and direction of our organization.”

Boston’s partnership with Maine follows the NBA D-League’s 11th and most successful season, where records were set with 60 GATORADE Call-Ups and 67 assignments, while 27 percent of players on 2011-12 NBA end-of-season rosters spent time in the NBA D-League. For the third consecutive year, the NBA D-League saw more than one million fans attend games across its 16 cities.

“The Maine Red Claws have enjoyed a strong three-year partnership with the Boston Celtics, dating back to the team’s inaugural season of 2009-10, and today we enter into a new era of that relationship,” said Maine Red Claws Team Chairman Bill Ryan, Jr. “The further strengthening of this partnership can only benefit both organizations, and we look forward to seeing Celtics talent come through Maine for years to come.”

BOSTON – The National Basketball Athletic Trainers Association named Ed Lacerte as their 2011-12 recipient of the Joe O’Toole Athletic Trainer of the Year. The award is chosen each year by his peers to be recognized for exemplary achievement or outstanding service to the NBA, the National Basketball Athletic Trainers Association or his community. Lacerte was selected for his outstanding service to the NBATA. The award is named after Joe O’Toole, a long time former head athletic trainer of the Atlanta Hawks, is regarded as the father of the NBATA. This is the second time Lacerte has been selected as Athletic Trainer of the Year with his previous award coming after the 1992-93 season.

“I’ve known Eddie for 25 years. He is the hardest working athletic trainer and most experienced in the league,” said Danny Ainge, Celtics President of Basketball Operations. “We are lucky to have him caring for our players.”

Lacerte completed his 25th season with the Celtics as their Head Athletic Trainer this season making him the longest-serving athletic trainer in the history of the club. Lacerte has also earned honors including being named as the athletic trainer for the “Dream Team” for the gold-medal winning 1992 US Olympic Basketball Team and a member of the local organizing committee for the U.S. Olympic Trials in 1996 and 2000.  Lacerte is also one of five NBA head athletic trainers who contributed to a HarperCollins Publishers book titled “NBA Workout Training Guide”, which was published in January of 1999. In July of 2009, the NBATA recognized Lacerte with the Ed Lacerte Service Award. The award was named in his honor for his contributions and exceptional service and assistance to the NBATA.

Jermaine O’Neal medical Update

BOSTON – The Boston Celtics announced today that center Jermaine O’Neal will undergo surgery on his left wrist and will miss the remainder of the 2011-12 season.

O’Neal has a chronic degenerative wrist condition that was exacerbated after a fall during the Celtics’ game against the Dallas Mavericks on February 20th. The wrist has not responded to immobilization and physical therapy, and the decision was made to proceed with surgery.

“Jermaine worked hard to get himself in condition to play this season despite his ongoing wrist issues,” said Celtics President of Basketball Operations Danny Ainge. “He played through pain the entire year and gave us all he could, but unfortunately after the fall against Dallas there simply wasn’t anything else he could do. We appreciate his contributions to our team over the last two years.”

@ESPNForsberg: Danny Ainge  “Jermaine worked hard to get himself in condition to play this season despite his ongoing wrist issues” . “He played through pain the entire year and gave us all he could, but unfortunately…there simply wasn’t anything else he could do.”

I’m not so sure Danny Ainge was not talking with hia tongue firmly implanted in his cheek. !

Chris Wilcox medical Update

BOSTON – The Boston Celtics announced today that forward Chris Wilcox will undergo aortic surgery at the Cleveland Clinic on March 29, and will miss the remainder of the 2011-12 season.

A team of leading cardiac specialists who consulted with Wilcox and the Celtics indicated that surgery should completely repair Wilcox’s condition and that he can expect to resume his NBA career next season.

Wilcox has long had an aortic abnormality that remained stable throughout his 10-year NBA career. However, as a precautionary measure, the Celtics medical staff scheduled frequent aortic scans for Wilcox, and a recent scan showed a significant enlargement of his aorta. After several follow-up tests, doctors recommended surgery.

“While we are saddened that Chris will not be able to play again this season, the most important thing is his health, and we were fortunate to have access to an amazing team of specialists to evaluate Chris’s case,” said Celtics President of Basketball Operations Danny Ainge. “The entire Celtics family supports Chris during this difficult time in his career.”

At Chris’s request, neither Chris nor the Celtics will have any additional comment at this time.

AN OPINION FROM A BOSTON CELTICS SEASON TICKET HOLDER

BY KEVIN HARRIMAN

Boston Sports Desk Publisher

BOSTON – History has a way of repeating itself. If you weren’t sure about that, you only need to look at the 2011-12  version of the Boston Celtics.

As currently constituted, the Celtics look like a conglomeration of aged veterans, well past their prime who have a difficult time keeping up with younger, more athletic teams.

In their prime, this group was devastating, dominant and “championship driven.”

Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen combined to win a championship in 2008 and were a Kendrick Perkins injury away from another Game-7 Championship win over the L.A. Lakers. But that seems so long ago at this point.

In a shortened NBA season of 66 games and many back-to-back games to be played between now and April, the Boston Celtics have no shot of Banner 18. None !

For Celtics Fans older than 30, you will remember the fatal flaw of the Celtics of the late-80′s and early 90′s. Then General Manager and President Red Auerbach  allowed Larry Bird, Kevin McHale and Robert Parish (The Original Big-3) to finish out their careers with the Celtics rather than trade them while they had some value. The Original Big -3 won three NBA Titles (1981, 84, 86) during their tenure but they all came earlier 80′s. When the late 80′s and early 90′s came around, this group was a shell of themselves.

Back problems for Bird, foot problems for McHale and minor nagging injuries to Parish didn’t allow Boston a chance following the 87 season to contend for a title. Instead of trading one or all of them to replenish the team, they were all allowed to sail of into the sunset. Yes I know Parish also played with Charlotte and won a title with Chicago as a role player following his time in Boston. But while they had value. they were kept in Boston and allowed to retire in the case of McHale and Bird in Celtics Green.

Does this sound familiar ? It should. General Manager Danny Ainge rolled the dice with the current cast of characters and it is coming back to bite him in the ass.  Boston finds itself off to a 4-8 start to the season and looking up in 10th spot in the Eastern Conference. Boston not only is far from competing for Banner 18, it finds itself in the midst of no longer being a desirable destination for NBA elite free agents.

Less than a month ago before the season started, both Chris Paul and  David West shot down the idea of coming to Boston. The likelihood that a player  of the talent of Dwight Howard coming to Boston…….not a chance.

This team will make the playoffs given the current state of other teams in the Eastern Conference. Boston has had very little trouble beating the bottom rung teams. But give them a game against a young, athletic squad and Boston shows its age and deficiencies. But with New York and Cleveland above them in the standings, there is still a good chance of Boston sneaking into the 7 or 8 spot and making the playoffs.

That statement alone is enough to make a season ticket holder vomit. And I for one am opposed to such a situation. Squeeking into the playoffs only to be ousted in the first round by Miami or Chicago has no appeal to me.

It’s time to blow this roster up. Both KG and Allen have expiring contracts that may be of some value to a team either needing a veteran talent for a championship run or looking to clear cap space next year. The same could be said for keeping KG and Allen, there by clearing cap space next season and trading Paul Pierce who has two years left on his deal.

Boston has just $34.5 M on the books for next season including Pierce’s nearly $17M salary.

Ainge deserves a great deal of credit for putting together deals for KG and Allen. Without that trade, the Celtics would not have won a title in 07. He also deserves credit for taking a chance and trading Perkins last season in hopes of giving The Green a chance at another title run last season. The move failed badly with Boston losing to Miami in the Conference semi-finals and Jeff Green (acquired in the Perkins trade) having to miss this season with a heart ailment.

But at least he didn’t stand pat when he knew last season’s team needed something more going into the playoffs before the trade deadline. This season, Ainge chose to stand pat, swapping Brandon Bass for Glen Davis before the season started as his lone big move of the off-season.

Ainge now has a chance to do something. Blow this thing up now or trade Pierce and allow KG and Allen to leave next season when their contracts are up. One or the other needs to happen. Standing still and allowing Pierce to retire a Celtic with no talent around him is not the answer.

Off -season moves lay ahead

BY KEVIN HARRIMAN

Boston Sports Desk Publisher

The Boston Celtics’ season is over ! The team that closed out the year in Miami last night will most likely not be around for next year as Danny Ainge hinted on WEEI this afternoon on the Big Show.

But with a salary cap probably around $58M next year, Boston needs to be creative to find ways to bring in younger more athletic players.

What moves would you make if you were GM Danny Ainge for a day ?
