P-BRUINS WIN IN OVERTIME 2-1

Camper Scores 31 Seconds Into Overtime, Take 3-0 Series Lead

Wilkes-Barre, PA – The Providence Bruins scored 31 seconds into overtime to defeat the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins 2-1 and take a three games to none series lead. Carter Camper scored the game winning goal, while Niklas Svedberg had 32 saves in the winning effort.

Both teams were unable to score during the first period, though each team had a few scoring chances. The Penguins had two man advantages, though its best opportunities came even strength. Providence had half of its first power play in the opening frame, though odd-man rushes at even strength supplied the best challenges to home goaltender, Brad Thiessen.

The P-Bruins scored first for the first time in the series, opening the scoring early in the middle period. Jared Knight scored his first professional playoff goal at 3:04 mark of the second period with a wrister from the far side off of Thiessen’s leg pad. Kyle MacKinnon and David Warsofsky logged the assists on the play.

The Penguins tied the game at one at the 10:42 mark. Trevor Smith chipped a rebound in just wide of Svedberg. Chad Kolarik and Cody Wild had the helpers that knotted the game at one apiece. The game went into the second intermission tied at one.

In the third, both goalies made some impressive saves. Svedberg made a huge glove stop at the top of the crease after a turnover gave Derek Nesbitt a mini-breakaway with 5:26 left. Later in the third, the Penguins had a few more good chances, but the P-Bruins escaped. A late power play led to an extended rush for the Pens, but Svedberg and the defense in front of him controlled the rebounds and eventually cleared the zone. The P-Bruins had one last chance with a rebound in the slot in the final 15 seconds of the frame, but Wilkes-Barre worked it away as time expired.

Camper scored the game-winner just 31 seconds into the extra period as he intercepted a poor pass just inside the blue line. He passed the puck to Jordan Caron, who worked the puck to Craig Cunningham as Camper headed for the far side of the crease. The P-Bruins center scored his league-leading seventh goal of the postseason to give his team a 2-1 victory and a three-games-to-none series lead.

Providence was 0-for-2 on the power play, while Wilkes-Barre went 0-for-3 on the man-advantage. Svedberg notched his sixth straight win with 32 saves, while Thiessen had 20 stops at the other end.

Providence has a chance to wrap up the series with Game 4 at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza in Wilkes-Barre on Friday at 7:05. Providence Bruins playoffs are presented by Dunkin’ Donuts.

BRUINS DEFEAT WHALE 1-0

Sweep the weekend and secure best record in the AHL

Hartford, CT — The Providence Bruins defeated the Connecticut Whale 1-0 this afternoon at the XL Center. Ryan Spooner scored the lone goal for the Bruins, his 14th of the season. Niklas Svedberg made 28 saves as the Bruins improved to 44-21-0-5.

The Whale, still looking to secure a playoff spot, controlled the opening minutes of play in Connecticut. However, Svedberg kept the Whale off the board by standing on his head and making some highlight reel saves. The Bruins turned it on halfway through the frame and were quick to capitalize. Spooner found the puck in the neutral zone, skated into Connecticut’s end and ripped a shot over Jason Missiaen’s shoulder to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead at 12:28. Kyle MacKinnon assisted on the opening goal.

Despite no goals being added to the game sheet in the second period, there were plenty of penalty minutes. In his first game with the Bruins since being acquired at the trade deadline, Rob Flick dropped the gloves with Dylan McIllrath at 4:53. In 51 games with Rockford this season, Flick recorded 97 penalty minutes, including seven fighting majors and was part of two bench clearing brawls. Staying true to his reputation, Flick easily dropped McIllrath with a few swift punches. In addition to Flick’s fight, Kevan Miller also dropped the gloves with Nick Palmieri for his sixth fight of the season.

Looking to tie the game, the Whale came out hungry in the third period. However, Svedberg was simply unbreakable as he stopped anything and everything the Whale threw his way. The Whale pulled Missiaen late in the frame, but they couldn’t produce with the extra attacker. The Bruins held on for the 1-0 win to sweep the weekend. The shutout marked Svedberg’s fourth of the season, which ties for the most among AHL rookie netminders.

Bruins Fall To Pirates

Tardif scores two in first game back from Boston

Providence, RI – The Providence Bruins fell to 26-17-0-3 on the season as they where defeated by the Portland Pirates 5-2 tonight at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center. Providence’s Jamie Tardif scored two goals on the night, improving to 23 goals on the season.

The action began immediately after the puck dropped in this extremely competitive, and literal fight for first place. Just 15 seconds into the first, Lane MacDermid dropped the gloves with Portland’s Maxim Goncharov. MacDermid rejoined Providence earlier in the day on a conditioning loan from Boston. Portland’s Mark Louis would also head to the box for cross checking giving Providence their first power play opportunity of the game. Providence was unable to capitalize on the power play and Portland would make them pay. With 14:09 left in the first, the Pirate’s Chris Brown scored the first goal of the game putting the Pirates up 1-0. Rob Klinkhammer and Evan Brophey assisted the goal. The game’s physicality would continue as both teams pushed and shoved after the whistle throughout the first. With 8:11 to go in the period, Providence would get another shot at the power play, as Portland’s Alexandre Bolduc would be called for slashing. Again, the Bruins were unable to capitalize on the opportunity. Almost immediately after the Bruins power play ended they would be tested on the penalty kill, as Garnet Exelby would be sent to the box for boarding. Bruins goalie Michael Hutchinson would turn back a barrage of shots, and the Bruins successfully killed the penalty. The period would come to and end with Portland leading 1-0, as they outshot Providence 11-8 in the period.

The second period began with 4-on-4 hockey following penalties late in the first by both teams. Once back to full strength, Portland would strike again as Jordan Martinook would score his second of the season assisted by Darian Dziurzynski and David Rundblad. Portland would now lead 2-0. Following back-to-back power plays on goaltender interference by Bolduc, and tripping by Brendan Shinnimin, Providence would finally get on the board. Portland goalie Mark Visentin would mishandle the puck in front of the net and Providence’s Jamie Tardif picked it up, wrapped around the net, and scored (9:13). The goal was assisted by Ryan Spooner and Carter Camper who would extend his point streak to seven games. This was the 22nd goal of the season for Tardif who was reassigned to Providence from Boston earlier in the day. With 9:22 left in the second, Pirate Chris Brown would be called for holding. Providence would have yet another power play opportunity and a chance to tie the game at 2. Portland however, had other plans. Throughout the majority of the power play, Portland did an excellent job of controlling possession and their puck control would pay off. Seconds after killing the power play Portland would increase their lead to 3-1, as Phil Lane would score on the assists from Brown and David Rundblad. Just over a minute after, Providence would answer back as Tardif would score his second of the game on a beautiful pass from Torey Krug. The assist would also extend Krug’s point streak to 7 games. With the goal, the Bruins tightened the game to 3-2. However, with 1:47 left in the period Portland would regain their two-goal advantage. Rob Klinkhammer would score his 11th of the season, assisted by Brophey and Boris Valabik. The period would end with Providence trailing by a pair of goals as Portland lead 4-2. Again, Portland would outshoot Providence in the period by a total of 14-9.

Following a late ruffing penalty in the second by MacDermid, Portland would begin the third period on the power play. They would not wait long to take advantage, as Klinkhammer would score his second of the game just 1:04 into the period. Goncharov would be credited with the assist as Portland increased their lead to 5-2. Providence would have three more power play opportunities throughout the period but where unable to take advantage of the numerous chances. As the final horn sounded Portland would prevail, ending the Bruin’s six-game winning streak by a final score of 5-2. Portland outshot Providence 35-27.
